TO DO AND SEE - LEITRIM

  • Breffni Castle – situated in the quiet village of Dromahair, Breffni Castle was once home to the powerful O’ Rourke clan. It was from here that Dearbhorgaill eloped with the King of Leinster, Diarmaid Mac Murchú, in the 12th century, and in so doing changed the course of Irish history forever, as it precipitated the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland.

  • Carrick-on-Shannon – one of the principal bases for pleasure cruises on the River Shannon, with origins dating from the start of the 17th century. This is an ideal destination for pleasure cruises and anglers.

  • Creevelea Abbey
Costello Chapel – situated in Carrick-on-Shannon, this curious chapel is said to be the second smallest chapel in the world and was erected in 1877 by Edward Costello following his wife’s untimely death.

  • Creevelea Abbey – set on the banks of the River Bonet on the Leitrim-Sligo border is this 16th century Franciscan Abbey. This was one of the last abbeys founded in Ireland before King Henry VIII dissolved all the monasteries throughout Ireland and England.

  • Glencar Waterfall
Glancar Lake and Waterfall – lying northwest of Manorhamilton, Glencar Waterfall is particularly impressive, while a drive around the lakeshore provides some of the loveliest scenery in Ireland.
Leitrim Way – perfect for the energetic, this is a picturesque 30-mile walk starting from Drumshanbo and finishing in Manorhamilton.

  • Mohill – once the site of a sixth century abbey, today the town of Mohill is better known as a centre for coarse angling. A sculpture in the town commemorates Toirealach O’ Cearúlláin, one of Ireland’s most celebrated tradional composers, who lived here for a time during the 18th century.

  • Parke’s Castle – close to the village of Dromahair, this extensively restored castle is a fine example of a 17th century fortified plantation manor-house and is open to the public.
