ACCOMMODATION REVIEW
Knockranny House HotelThis modern Victorian styled hotel was built in May 1997. Situated on an elevated site overlooking the heritage town of Westport, and nestling at the foot of Croagh Patrick, Ireland's Holy Mountain, this purpose built four-star hotel offers modern luxuries, with service, elegance and style that is reminiscent of a bygone era.

The interior of the hotel gives a feeling of space and comfort. The reception, foyer and gallery are large, airy and tastefully furnished, while the conservatory, lounge and drawing room offer quiet havens to admire the views, have afternoon tea or just relax in front of an open fire. All guestrooms are equipped to the highest standard, furnished with every modern convenience and offer views of Croagh Patrick and the hotel's gardens. Guests may enjoy elegant dining in the La Fougère restaurant, which offers gourmet dining in a beautifully appointed room or visit the Brehon Bar, which with its splendid decor, open fires and welcoming atmosphere, is the ideal place to unwind after a day of golf or sightseeing.

The heritage town of Westport is just a short walk from the hotel and offers many attractions to keep visitors occupied. The earliest habitation of the town dates back to 5,000 BC but John Browne, a local landlord and later a Member of Parliament, was responsible for developing Westport as it is today. On the lands he accumulated upon the death of his father, he set about constructing the new town of Westport in 1743 and many of the fine buildings of this period are still evident today. Other local attractions include Croagh Patrick, where St. Patrick is reputed to have fasted for 40 days and nights in 441 AD. There is now a church at the summit of Croagh Patrick and pilgrims now visit and retrace the steps of St. Patrick and climb to the summit.
